The Drau cycle path

Undoubtedly, the Drau cycle path is one of the most spectacular bicycle routes in Europe and especially this segment of the tour is suitable for families and novice cyclists. The cycle path starts at the source of the Drava River in Toblach/Dobbiaco. This is the place where Gustav Mahler, the composer, found most of his inspiration. The River Drava accompanies you on the way to the East Austrian capital of Lienz. You continue following the easy Drau Bicycle Path and after a short transfer over Gailbersattel you will cycle along the wild romantic “Gailtal Radweg” passing small villages and old farmhouses. On the way you will encounter several lakes where you can have a refreshing bath.

The Drau cycle path is ideal for beginners and families. The route mainly takes you alongside the River Drava and there are no steep inclines. The bicycle path is well marked. The route goes from South Tyrol across Eastern Tyrol in Austria and the “Gailtal Radweg” to Villach in Carinthia. You will discover unique villages such as Toblach and Innichen of the Upper Pusteria Valley situated in the heart of the Dolomites or The radiant town of Lienz (Castle Bruck – Roman excavations “Aguntum”) or Castle Porcia at Spittal/Drau. Also you will be pedalling along wonderful and picturesque landscapes and lakes: “Ossiacher, Faaker” and “Wörther See”

Arrival at the hotel in the Alta Pusteria Valley. Private car parking or car parking nearby is included in the price if you arrive there with your own car. For those arriving earlier, it is well worth cycling into the Höhlenstein Valley to visit Lake Toblach. The brave among you can go to the Adventure Park in Toblach to climb the high rope course. It is also possible to visit the Gustav Mahler Wild Animal Park..

SECOND DAY: Niederdorf/Villabassa or Toblach/Dobbiaco – Lienz

Starting in Niederdorf/Villabassa or Toblach/Dobbiaco you cycle along the bike path to Innichen and then on to Sillian and one of the most sunniest cities in Austria – Lienz. Attractions for the whole family: – Wichtelpark in Sillian, one of the most beautiful playgrounds of the Hochpustertal – Loacker “World of Goodness” and Moccaria in Heinfels – Galitzenklamm, a waterfall with an adventure park for the whole family – Alpine Coaster “Osttirodler” in Lienz – Petting zoo near the station of the Osttirodler

THIRD DAY: Lienz – Berg

You leave from where the Isel flows into the Drau and carry on with the bike path to Oberdrauburg (“Perchten and Alm” museum and old mill) and then to Berg. This was once an important Roman Trade Route. Attractions for the whole family: – Roman city and museum Aguntum, located about 5 km after Lienz – Outdoor swimming pool in Berg

Advice: The hotel (Ferienpark Putz) is a point of sale for the Kärnten-Card (not included in the package price), a card that provides you several advantages, as for example different entry fees (Folk culture museum in Spittal, boat trips, Monkey- Mountain in Villach and many more). With this card you are also granted a 50% discount on public means of transport in Carinthia.

FOURTH DAY: Berg – Tröpolach

In the morning a transfer takes you over the “Gailbergsattel”, a pass between Berg and Kötschach-Mauthen. From Kötschach-Mauthen you start cycling along the river “Gail” through idyllic landscape and dreamy villages until you reach Tröpolach, where you stay for two nights.

FIFTH DAY: Tröpolach

This day is dedicated to the exploration of the Nassfeld, which is a ski resort in winter and a family mountain in the summer months. A cable car takes you up on 2,000 m above sea level! Once arrived, there are many attractions for the whole family, among those for example a mountain coaster. The Piccolino-Express, a small train, will take you to the different points of interest. The Nassfeld Day Card is included in the package price!

SIXTH DAY: Tröpolach – Villach

Today you are heading for your final destination, Villach. On the way you will pass the small Lake “Pressegger See”, which, with its warm water, will tempt you to stay there for some time. There are two lidos and an adventure lido waiting for you. If you choose so, you don’t have to hurry afterwards: you can simply take the train to Villach. Otherwise you can of course go there by bike.

SEVENTH DAY: Villach

On your trip’s last day you can choose between different possibilities: Either you cycle around the famous Ossiacher See, which offers various possibilities to take a bath or a boat trip (a tour from Villach around the whole lake is about 65 kilometres long), or you choose to go to the Landskron Castle. It was destroyed in the 19th century, and now there is a restaurant and a falconry centre conducting regular flying demonstrations. The hill on which the castle is located is also the home of the “Monkey Mountain”, a park with 145 Japanese Macaques that can be visited. You can also make a boat trip on the Drava from Villach to Sankt Niklas and then cycle to the Faaker Lake (2km/100m ascent).

EIGHT DAY: Sweet Goodbye
